[Spécial Indépendance] Général Birame Diop : L’envol d’un enfant de Thiès vers les sommets de l’État
Continuing our series on the emblematic figures of our defense forces, Seneweb invites you to discover the career of an officer whose renown extends far beyond our borders. Following our profile of General Meïssa Sellé Ndiaye, we now turn our attention to a man of policy and strategy, a true product of aeronautical excellence. Here is the story of General Birame Diop.
Pilot, instructor, chief of staff, UN advisor, and now Minister of the Armed Forces. At 65, General Birame Diop stands out for his exemplary career in the service of national security and defense.
On the occasion of the 66th anniversary of Senegal's accession to international sovereignty, General Birame Diop stands out as one of the most respected figures in the Senegalese army. Born on March 29, 1961, in Thiès, into a family originally from Sokone, he embodies a life where discipline, excellence, and patriotism have been intertwined since childhood.
From the Prytanée to the cockpit of airplanes
After primary school in Thiès , he entered the Prytanée Militaire (military academy) in Saint-Louis. A brilliant science student, he joined the Royal Air Force Academy in Marrakech in 1981, graduating in 1985 with a degree in aeronautical engineering and a transport pilot qualification. His thirst for excellence led him to Montreal to obtain a commercial pilot's license, then to the United States and France for specialized training in flight safety and command. A captain and instructor since 1994, he quickly established his professionalism.
Within the Air Force, he has held all the strategic positions: head of office, Chief of Staff of the Air Force in 2015, then Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces in 2020. His expertise extends internationally, where he served as military advisor to peace operations for the United Nations from 2021 to 2024, thus strengthening his reputation on a global scale.
Excellence in service of the flag
An intellectual as well as a military man, he has been pursuing a doctorate in diplomacy and international relations at the CHEDS in Dakar since 2015, and has extensively conducted training on governance, mediation, and security in fragile states. His career demonstrates a rare ability to combine technical expertise, strategy, and a global perspective.
Appointed Minister of the Armed Forces in the first Pastef government in April 2024, General Diop holds a key position in securing and modernizing the national forces. His decorations—the French Legion of Honour, the National Order of the Lion, and the Order of Merit—attest to his unwavering commitment to serving Senegal and promoting peace.
This year, by a happy coincidence, the Independence Day celebration will be held in Thiès, his hometown. While General Birame Diop was not the one who initiated this, this symbolic setting perfectly illustrates the convergence between an exemplary individual journey and the national surge of pride and remembrance.
