Homosexualité : Doudou Diène, Alice Nkom et plusieurs personnalités interpellent Diomaye Faye
A group of around thirty prominent figures of African origin addressed the Senegalese president in the French media outlet Libération, asking him for "a moratorium" on the application of the new law on homosexuality, in the face of the "climate of fear, hatred and violence" which "has taken hold in the country".
"A young man, perceived as homosexual – rightly or wrongly – was stabbed in the street," while others "are beaten, imprisoned, or rejected by their family and community," the signatories wrote in their open letter to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, published Sunday by the daily newspaper.
"At the same time, people living with HIV, including heterosexuals, no longer dare to go to health centers to get tested or treated," and "associations that used to support the most exposed people can no longer do so," they say.
For the signatories, "this climate of hatred and violence against homosexuals is in contradiction with left-wing pan-Africanism," claimed by the Senegalese president during his election.
"Some claim that homosexuality is foreign to Africa. This idea does not stand up to scrutiny. All African historians and ethnologists know this," they write.
The signatories are also concerned about the "rise of fundamentalist and violent movements" which "weaken societies and threaten African unity by spreading ideologies of hatred, division and exclusion".
"We are all part of the same pan-African family (...) It is through discussion, under the baobab tree or elsewhere, that these disagreements can be addressed," they say.
The op-ed is signed in particular by lawyer Alice Nkom, former UN Special Rapporteur on new forms of discrimination Doudou Diène, essayist Matthieu Niango, radio host and football coach Brahim Naït-Balk, and filmmaker Jean-Claude Barny.
Members of parliament from Martinique and Guadeloupe (Victorin Lurel, senator from Guadeloupe, Marcellin Nadeau, deputy from Martinique, Olivier Serva, deputy from Guadeloupe) and the president of SOS Racisme, Dominique Sopo, are also signatories.
