« Inadmissible » et « faible » : Ndioro Ndiaye et des leaders féminines attaquent la composition du nouveau gouvernement
Female figures have deemed "unacceptable" the underrepresentation of women in the government formed on June 1st by the new Prime Minister, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo, where they only have four members out of thirty.
For the former secretary general of the Democratic Union of Teachers of Senegal (UDEN), Awa Wade, quoted by APS, "we cannot accept that in a government of 30 members we only have four female ministers. I find it unacceptable that women find themselves with this [small] number" of ministerial portfolios.
The retired education inspector spoke on Saturday at the book launch of "These One Hundred First Women of Senegal: The Pioneers Who Paved the Way in Public and Professional Life" by journalist and former diplomatic attaché Samba Mangane, a collection of portraits of trailblazing Senegalese women. This book, with a foreword by journalist Majib Sène, highlights pioneers in the fields of health, justice, politics, the judiciary, culture, social life, labor unions, the military, and more.
Former minister and historian Penda Mbow, first female prosecutor Dior Fall Sow, journalist Diatou Cissé, five-time African basketball champion Mame Maty Mbengue, among others, took part in the presentation ceremony.
Following in the footsteps of Awa Wade, the former Minister of Social Development, Ndioro Ndiaye, considers the number of female ministers to be "low", noting that in reality, "there are only two female ministers and two secretaries of state" in this government.
"We need to go and see the influential people, the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic, the Ministry of Family, to tell them that it is not normal to manage this country by leaving aside a majority that has been transformed into a minority when it comes to forming a government," she said, assuming that the Senegalese population is made up mostly of women.
According to the fifth General Population and Housing Census (RGPH-5), the last official census in Senegal carried out in 2023 by the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), out of a population of 18,126,390 inhabitants, there are 50.6% men and 49.4% women.
Ndioro Ndiaye, who is also president of the NGO Alliance for Migration, Leadership and Development, nevertheless invites women not to focus on ministerial positions, because "they are not the only spaces of power".
“Women must be at the decision-making table. The Prime Minister and the Head of State must understand that there are other positions for women: Chief of Staff, Technical Advisor – one of the most political positions in a cabinet – Agency Director, Secretary General of Ministries, Chairman of the Board, etc.,” she argued.
Calling for words to be put into action, she invited her peers to request an audience with the head of state in order to give him "the information on the specificities of women and what they can bring to this country".
