« Incompréhensible ! » : L'avis tranché de Mbaye Jacques Diop sur la situation contractuelle de Pape Thiaw
High-level sporting performance isn't solely dependent on what happens on the pitch. Behind the raw results often lie bureaucratic hurdles and managerial dysfunctions that can have serious consequences for team cohesion. Invited by I Radio this Sunday, June 28th, to discuss the management of the national team, former manager and sports journalist Mbaye Jacques Diop firmly stated that these crucial off-field issues must be resolved well before the start of major international competitions. According to him, the persistence of these recurring administrative problems continues to unnecessarily weaken national teams at a time when they most need stability.
The analyst first points to the recurring and sensitive issue of participation bonuses. While switching to a payment system exclusively via bank transfer undeniably offers greater transparency and security, it sometimes causes technical delays that disrupt players' concentration during the tournament. Mbaye Jacques Diop recommends that these financial transactions be finalized before the first group match, allowing the international players to focus solely on their objectives on the field.
The Pape Thiaw case and the paradox of salary financing
Beyond the bonuses, the journalist raised a significant issue by revisiting the precarious contractual situation of the national team coach, Pape Thiaw, who left to lead the team at the World Cup even though his employment contract was still not officially finalized. This administrative situation was deemed completely "incomprehensible" at this level of professionalism. According to Mbaye Jacques Diop, the responsibility for this legal ambiguity is largely shared between the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), the Ministry of Sports, and the coach himself, who agreed to take the helm without prior guarantees.
Finally, the former leader highlighted a major financial paradox within Senegalese sport. He expressed surprise that the state continues to cover the entire salaries of national team coaches while certain organizations, such as the football federation, are now generating significant financial resources and marketing rights revenue. For Mbaye Jacques Diop, the time has come for the most financially sound federations to fully assume their budgetary responsibilities and ease the burden on public coffers.
