30e édition des Kamils de Saint-Louis : La communauté musulmane prie pour ses défunts
The 30th edition of the Kamils of Saint-Louis took place this Sunday at the Medina Marmiyal cemetery. Initiated by the late Alioune Badara Diagne, this day of prayer brought together thousands of faithful from all corners of the three-hundred-year-old city to reflect and implore divine mercy for the deceased.
In an atmosphere of fervor and contemplation, verses from the Quran were recited to perpetuate a tradition now firmly established in the local religious calendar.
Spokesperson for the organizing committee, Malal Junior Diagne gave thanks to God and praised the strong mobilization of the people of Saint-Louis, highlighting the good organization of this anniversary edition.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, the committee also sent a message to the authorities, calling on them to work towards easing the social climate at the University of Saint-Louis, which has recently been marked by tensions between students and law enforcement.
"Through the Kamils and the reading of the Quran, we implore a consensus and common ground to pacify this space," the spokesperson said, noting that these students are destined to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Logistically, the organizing committee appealed to the local population for support in setting up tents to provide more shade and comfort for participants. It also called on the government to consider building a new cemetery and repairing sections of the wall at the Medina Marmiyal cemetery, whose state of disrepair is a cause for concern.
Thirty years after its launch, the Kamils of Saint-Louis remain a powerful moment of spirituality, communion and advocacy for social peace in the old town.
