The recitation of the Catholic rosary holds an important place among the five spiritual pillars of the Marian pilgrimage to Popenguine. Recited in several languages, the rosary embodies the universality of the Church and brings together thousands of pilgrims each year at the grotto, who come to entrust their intentions to the Virgin Mary.
An object of piety and meditation
Originating in the Middle Ages to allow illiterate believers to recite psalms or religious texts in a monotonous tone, the rosary has become one of the pillars of the Catholic faith. An object of piety deeply rooted in Christian tradition, it is composed of five sets of ten beads called "decades," separated by a large bead. The Catholic rosary begins with a cross and five beads. On the cross, the faithful recite the Creed: "I believe in God." On the large beads, the "Our Father" is recited, while the first three small beads are dedicated to three "Hail Marys," symbols of the Trinity. This ritual introduces faith, hope, and charity before leading into the meditation of the mysteries of the Rosary.
The mysteries of the life of Christ and Mary
In the rosary, each decade is associated with a significant moment in the Gospel. The Joyful Mysteries recall the birth and childhood of Jesus, the Luminous Mysteries his public life, the Sorrowful Mysteries his Passion and death, and the Glorious Mysteries his Resurrection, Ascension, and the Assumption of Mary.
The recitation of the Rosary follows a precise schedule: the Joyful Mysteries on Mondays and Saturdays, the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesdays and Sundays, and the Luminous Mysteries on Thursdays. This arrangement allows the faithful to engage with a different aspect of the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary each day of the week.
Beyond the Marian rosary, there are other forms of rosary, such as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, proposed by Saint Faustina and recited daily at 3 p.m., or the Chaplet of the Weapon of Our Lord Jesus Christ, commonly called the Chaplet of Our Lady of Sorrows, which has a different configuration than the rosary to the Virgin Mary. This specific rosary is composed of 49 beads divided into 7 sets of 7.
Reciting a rosary is first and foremost a way to experience structured and meditative prayer, centered on the teachings of the Church, the passion of Christ and the hope of the resurrection.
