Révélation du message caché du Voyage céleste (Al-Miʿrāj) du Prophète Muhammad (PSL)
There are events, however intimate, that leave a lasting mark on a civilization. The Night Journey of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a perfect illustration of this.
The Journey: One night, while he was near the Kaaba—the sacred House in Mecca—the angel Jibril (Gabriel) came to him with a mount named al-Buraq , of a size intermediate between a donkey and a mule, whose speed surpassed all human capabilities. Together, they traveled to Jerusalem, about 1300 km away—a journey that took nearly thirty days for the caravans of that time.
In Jerusalem, on the site of the former Temple of Sulayman (Solomon), the Prophet ﷺ led all the prophets sent by Allah in prayer. This act symbolizes his spiritual legacy and his role as the seal of prophethood.
After this stage, he was raised through the seven heavens (al-Miʿrāj). There he met successively, in order: Adam (1st heaven); Īsā (Jesus) and Yaḥyā (John) (2nd heaven); Yūsuf (Joseph) (3rd heaven); Idrīs (4th heaven) ; Hārūn (Aaron) (5th heaven); Moussa (Moses) (6th heaven); Ibrāhīm (Abraham) (7th heaven)
He was then raised to Sidrat al-Muntahā , the Lotus of the Limit, the ultimate boundary of known creation. There, he received the immense honor of a private audience with Allah—without any means we can conceive—and was given a precious gift: the daily prayers (Ṣalawāt) . Then he was brought back to earth that same night.
A symbolic reading of celestial encounters: The question arises: does the order of the prophets carry a message? Classical exegetes have offered various interpretations: a welcoming committee reflecting the importance of the prophets, or encounters foreshadowing the Prophet's (peace be upon him) future difficulties. I propose, however, that we contemplate luminous spiritual symmetries.
Adam ↔ Ibrahim (1st – 7th Heaven ): Earthly origin and spiritual fulfillment
Adam : origin, Father of humanity, caliph on earth (Quran 2:30).
. Ibrāhīm (Abraham) : model of pure monotheism (Quran 2:124), spiritual father of believers.
Symmetry: Man is both a responsible earthly creature and a being called to pure submission to Allah.
ʿĪssā & Yaḥyā ↔ Moussa (2nd - 6th Heaven ): The creative Word and the revealed Word
. ʿĪsā (Jesus): called Kalimatullah (Quran 4:171), Word that gives life to Jesus.
. Yaḥyā (John): Word of Allah which announces the good news of the birth of Yahyā (Quran 3:39).
. Moussa (Moses) : Kalimullah , Word of Allah addressed directly to Moussa (Quran 4:164).
Symmetry: The Word of Allah is both: creative and merciful; revelation and guidance.
Yusuf ↔ Harun (3rd – 5th Heaven ): Tested brotherhood and supportive brotherhood
. Yūsuf (Joseph): wounded brotherhood, jealousy, forgiveness (Quran 12:4, 12:100).
. Hārūn (Aaron): supporting brother in the mission of Moussa (Moses) (Quran 20:29–30).
Symmetry: Human brotherhood is the place of trial… or of fortification.
The center of symmetry: Idrīs: Elevation and mystery
“We raised him to a high station.” (Quran 19:57 ) Idris occupies the center. Little narrative, few details. He symbolizes: spiritual elevation; the unseen (al-ghayb). According to tradition, Idris is raised alive to the fourth heaven where he meets the Angel of Death. He is the symbol of the dignity of the discreet believer whom Allah elevates.
Sacred geography
The journey connects: The Kaʿba (Quran 17-1) — The Earthly House; Al-Masjid al-Aqṣā — place of the prophetic imamate; Al-Bayt al-Maʿmūr — The celestial House visited by the angels: It is a vertical axis connecting earth and heaven.
The Salat: the Mi'raj of the believer: The structure of the Night Journey is symbolically replayed in prayer:
Bodily submission (Adam ↔ Ibrahim): The believer stands, bows, and prostrates in the silence of heart and mind. He detaches himself from worldly concerns. He unites the body (the earthly essence of man) and the soul (the spiritual essence of man) by following in the footsteps of the Prophet through the rigorous imitation of his bowing and prostrations.
Listening to the Quranic Word (ʿĪsā & Yaḥyā ↔ Moussa): The Word of Allah gives life to the heart. The Word announces the good news of Paradise. The Word speaks directly to the believer and guides them to the Straight Path.
Brotherhood (Yusuf ↔ Harun): In congregation at the mosque: shoulders aligned, hearts united. Prayer heals divisions.
Elevation (Idrīs) : Each prayer is an ascent in the ladder of piety and the believer performs it until meeting death in the high degrees of piety.
Like Idris, the believer is elevated to higher spiritual levels and experiences intimate communion with his Lord by following in the footsteps of the Messenger through the daily performance of Salat. Salat thus appears as the gift offered to every Muslim to spiritually experience the true journey of our beloved Prophet, Rasul Allah.
