The State of Senegal has placed Universal Health Coverage (UHC) at the heart of its health policy, with the ambition of guaranteeing all its citizens equitable access to quality health services in line with Axis 2 of the National Transformation Agenda Senegal 2050, entitled "Quality human capital and social equity".
Realizing this ambition requires various initiatives, including extending health insurance coverage to workers in the informal economy, rural areas, the poor, and vulnerable groups, with a particular focus on providing care for adolescents and young people. As part of its mission, the CSU also ensures the implementation of medical assistance policies for people aged 60 and over (Plan Sésame), children under 5, women who have undergone cesarean sections, and people suffering from kidney failure (Dialysis), including kidney transplantation.
Among the vulnerable groups today are the victims of the 2024 pre-election violence, some of whom suffer from injuries, trauma, and other mental health issues requiring close medical follow-up. Hence the need for health insurance cards, which will be issued to them this Thursday, April 30th, at the CICES (International Center for Foreign Trade of Senegal), to provide them with medical care through the Universal Health Coverage program, under the leadership of its Director General, Dr. El Hadji Séga Guèye.
Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and in the presence of the Minister of Family, Social Action and Solidarity, Ms. Maïmouna Dièye, this meeting is eagerly awaited by the beneficiaries who currently face enormous difficulties accessing the country's healthcare services. Some suffer from horrific injuries, while others develop complications and other traumas that have become unbearable.
