In response to concerns raised by reports of hantavirus cases internationally, the Senegalese Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene reassured the public: no cases of hantavirus have been detected in Senegal, nor in any other African country to date.

In an official statement released this Monday, health authorities specified that the identified cases involve only passengers from a cruise ship that traveled between South America and certain Atlantic islands. Those affected are currently being cared for by the relevant health services in the countries concerned, under the coordination of the World Health Organization (WHO).

A health system under increased surveillance

The ministry emphasizes that Senegal has a national epidemiological surveillance and alert system capable of ensuring early detection, rapid investigation and effective management of any disease with epidemic potential.

The authorities also point out that the country has biological diagnostic capabilities as well as specialized technical teams, which can be mobilized immediately in the event of a health threat.

Reminder about hantavirus and prevention measures

Hantavirus is an infectious disease that can cause several symptoms, including fever, muscle pain, extreme fatigue, and, in some cases, breathing difficulties.

As with many infections, the ministry stresses the importance of strictly adhering to basic hygiene measures: regular hand washing, maintenance of living spaces, proper food storage and rigorous waste management.

A call for calm and vigilance

Health authorities urge the public to avoid panic, while remaining vigilant and obtaining information exclusively through official channels.

The Ministry of Health assures that it is closely monitoring the evolution of the international health situation in collaboration with its technical partners, in order to guarantee a rapid and appropriate response if necessary.

In short, Senegal remains free of hantavirus to date, while the health surveillance system remains fully operational to protect the population.
