World Tuberculosis Day: in Kédougou, a disease that remains a concern
On the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, celebrated every March 24, health authorities in the Kédougou region are raising the alarm about the persistence of this infectious disease, which is responsible for serious cases and deaths.
Khadidiatou Ndaw Diouf, the tuberculosis focal point at the Regional Health Directorate, makes an unequivocal observation: "In Kédougou, we can say that tuberculosis is still present. It has grown. If we compare 2025 to 2024, there is a clear increase, especially among men."
Of the 210 cases expected in 2025, only 177 have actually been recorded. This discrepancy worries health authorities. "The 33 missing cases are in the community. And if we don't track them down, tuberculosis will continue to wreak havoc and spread in the region," she warns.
Ms. Diouf reminds everyone that tuberculosis is a curable disease: "It is a disease that can be treated and cured. Treatment is free and available in all health centers in the region."
In 2025, ten tuberculosis-related deaths were recorded in the region's three health districts. For 2026, the Kédougou health district has already recorded 40 cases.
