Saint-Louis : Le cri du cœur des enfants trisomiques à travers 21 messages
International Down Syndrome Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Saint-Louis. The Saint-Louis Social Inclusion Center (CISSL) marked the event with a large walk on Saturday, March 28. The center's director, Khady Diallo, accompanied by numerous partners, walked through the streets of the old city to give a voice to the most vulnerable and to highlight the center's mission.
This 6th edition provided an opportunity for children with Down syndrome to share 21 symbolic messages. Powerful and moving words that encourage a shift in perspective: "I don't have an illness, I have a genetic difference," "An extra chromosome, extra dreams," or even "Don't look at me with pity, look at me with respect." These phrases, spoken with determination, remind us that Down syndrome is not a limitation, but a diversity that enriches society.
This march resonated as a genuine cry for inclusion, demanding that these children have access to the same rights and opportunities as all citizens. It is an urgent appeal to society to open its arms and finally value difference.
The event's success was due to a massive mobilization of the Saint-Louis community. Young people and civil society joined forces to advocate for better support for children with intellectual disabilities. Leading institutions such as the University Gaston Berger (UGB), the Departmental Council, the Regional Education Authority, and the Regional Directorate of Social Action were all present.
The march also saw the participation of students from Lycée Ameth Fall and École Boubacar Diop, as well as several associations (APEHPI, Badiénou Gox, "Ndar bu nu beug"). The headmistress, Khady Diallo, expressed her gratitude for the commitment of artists Tex LBK and Abdou Guité Seck, who volunteered their time to entertain the crowd throughout the day.
The highlight of this hike was undoubtedly the presentation of children with Down syndrome already working at SONAGED. According to Ms. Diallo, this is concrete proof that successful social and professional inclusion is possible in Senegal.
