Santé féminine : Les risques méconnus liés à une protection menstruelle portée trop longtemps

Many women use sanitary pads during their periods, but many are unaware of the real risks associated with continuing to use the same product for extended periods. To shed light on the dangers of this still widespread practice, a reporter from Guineematin.com interviewed Dr. Mamoudou Doumbouya, a general practitioner, who provided detailed explanations and essential advice for intimate health.

Germ proliferation and fermentation

The expert points out that, from the age of 13 until menopause, women use various forms of menstrual protection (sanitary pads, tampons, or period underwear). However, wearing the same pad all day can lead to serious complications.

Dr. Doumbouya is adamant: wearing a sanitary pad for too long promotes the growth of microbes. "Germs are released throughout the day, and if the pad isn't changed, they multiply and ferment. This can reappear in other forms and cause infections in the genital area. Sanitary pads should not be used for extended periods," the doctor warns.

Hygiene rule: change every 4 to 6 hours

Dr. Doumbouya insists: hygiene rules are universal, regardless of the level of bleeding. "Whatever the amount of bleeding, a pad should be changed every 4 to 6 hours. What is expelled is a residue of the body; if it remains for a long time, it becomes a favorable environment for fermentation," he explains.

The dangers of traditional fabrics

The doctor also warns against the use of scraps of fabric, still common among some women, which are not immune to infection. "The fabrics used are often worn and unprepared. Normally, they should be clean, washed, soaked in hot water, and ironed before use. Otherwise, they can contain germs that complicate the situation," warns Dr. Doumbouya.

Risks: from local infection to infertility

When questioned about illnesses directly linked to prolonged use of sanitary protection, the specialist is categorical. "When the fluid remains for a long time, it ferments and germs settle on it. This can cause vaginitis, vulvovaginitis, pimples, itching, and even sores. Internally, it leads to yellowish discharge. In the long run, this can cause infertility," he warns.
