Sexuality often remains a taboo subject in Senegalese society, where open discussions are rare. Yet, a segment of the youth actively engages in sexual practices that can have serious consequences for their health and social well-being. In a context where the fight against HIV/AIDS remains a priority, it is crucial to raise awareness among Senegalese youth, whom specialized organizations describe as "sexually active."
To corroborate this observation, Seneweb looked at new relationship dynamics. Far from the usual standards of seduction, the new generation favors more direct and rapid approaches, largely facilitated by the omnipresence of social networks.
The "Sex-friend"
Many young people are now turning to casual relationships, commonly known as "friends with benefits." These relationships are based strictly on physical pleasure, excluding any romantic or emotional attachment. In this arrangement, each partner retains the freedom to see other people, while meeting occasionally to satisfy sexual desires.
The "Plan"
Even more ephemeral, a "hookup" refers to a casual encounter between two people who, more often than not, don't know each other. Even more worrying, contact information is sometimes exchanged directly, facilitating multiple encounters. In some cases, these "hookups" can lead to transactional exchanges (sex for services or goods).
A challenge for public health
These new methods raise ethical questions, but above all, public health concerns. When questioned on the subject, Dr. Safiatou Thiam, Executive Secretary of the National AIDS Control Council (CNLS), stated that effective awareness campaigns require a thorough study of these behaviors. According to her, it is essential to adapt prevention approaches to capture the attention of this new generation and curb the spread of infections.
