The National Fire Brigade of Senegal (BNSP) has published a statement on the terrible traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 in Farafenni, in Gambian territory, which claimed the lives of seven people of Senegalese nationality.

According to Commander Yatma Dièye, Head of the Information and Public Relations Division of the National Fire Brigade, the rescue services were requested in exceptional circumstances involving Senegalese nationals abroad.

"The rescue services of the National Fire Brigade of Senegal, specifically the intervention sector of the Fire and Rescue Group number 3 which covers the regions of Kaolack, Fatick and Kaffrine, were alerted today, Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at around 11:30 a.m. for a medical evacuation of injured Senegalese nationals, following a road traffic accident in Farafenni, a Gambian territory," he said in a statement sent to Seneweb.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the fire service authorities immediately mobilized significant human and material resources. "In this regard, Lieutenant-Colonel Erasme Sambou, commander of Fire and Rescue Group No. 3, committed substantial resources to ensure the effective care of the victims," stated Commander Diéye.

Upon arriving at the scene of the tragedy, emergency services discovered a scene of extreme violence. "Two public transport vehicles, one a minibus and the other a bus, collided," explained the spokesperson for the BNSP.

Commander Yatma Dièye gave a particularly tragic provisional report on this accident: "The provisional report states 15 victims, including 7 people who lost their lives.

Of the seven deceased, two are in unidentifiable condition. Seven seriously injured, one slightly injured.

The transport of lifeless bodies

Regarding the handling of the bodies, the firefighters proceeded with their evacuation to Senegalese hospital facilities. "As for the deceased, six were transported and taken to the hospital in Kaolack, and one body was taken to Nioro," stated Commander Diéye.

The evacuation and treatment of the injured took place in two stages, given the varying severity of their injuries and the need to act quickly.

"For the treatment of the injured, initially, two injured people, one seriously and one with minor injuries, were transported to Farafenni General Hospital. Six seriously injured people were transported to the Nemban Clinic in Bakau," the fire department spokesperson explained.

The second phase of the evacuation required coordination with the highest state authorities: "In a second phase, the Senegalese authorities took all the necessary steps for a medical evacuation by air of the injured to Dakar," he added.

Commander Yatma Dièye concluded his address with a message imbued with emotion and a sense of responsibility. "We bow before the memory of the deceased and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. At the same time, we urge all road users to exercise greater caution and strictly adhere to the traffic code."
