« Acharnement contre Pape Ngagne Ndiaye » : le Forum du justifiable hausse le ton
The Forum of the Justiciable expressed its concern over the repeated summonses targeting journalists, denouncing a practice deemed to be an attack on press freedom and the right to information.
In a statement released on Monday, May 4, the organization led by Babacar Ba reiterated that freedom of the press is a fundamental pillar of any democracy. According to the organization, any form of pressure exerted on a journalist not only harms the journalist personally, but also infringes upon citizens' right to free and independent information.
“Enough is enough. The harassment of journalist Pape Ngagne must stop. The Forum of the Justiciable reminds everyone that freedom of the press is not a luxury, it is an essential pillar of any democracy. When a journalist is repeatedly targeted, it is not only his person who is attacked, but also the right of every citizen to be informed freely and without intimidation,” she said.
"The press is not an enemy: it is a mirror, sometimes uncomfortable, but necessary."
Before continuing, he added: “Pape Ngagne, through his work, embodies the courage to speak out, to analyze, and to question. Harassing him is an attempt to silence a voice that disturbs, but above all, it undermines the entire profession. It is time to remember that the role of the journalist is not to please, but to report, to enlighten, and sometimes to disturb. Those who relentlessly attack him forget that criticism and debate are the driving forces of progress. The press is not an enemy: it is a mirror, sometimes uncomfortable, but necessary.”
In their analysis, Babacar Ba and Co. believe that these practices are taking place in a context marked by World Press Freedom Day and by Senegal's decline in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index established by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
Faced with this situation, they are calling on the authorities to end all forms of pressure on journalists and to guarantee respect for democratic principles. "Supporting Pape Ngagne means defending freedom of expression, protecting the people's right to independent information. Enough is enough: this spiral of harassment must end, and we must reaffirm that democracy cannot survive without free and respected journalists," they stated.
