Agnam : Marche Des Populations, Le Conflit Autour Du Phosphate S’enlise
In Agnam, the standoff is intensifying between local residents and the operating company, Ama Afrique. This weekend, another demonstration took place in the district, highlighting the continued protest by residents.
Wearing red armbands and carrying placards, residents marched this Saturday, July 4, 2026. In the Agnam district, resistance to the phosphate mining project remains strong. Between Quran recitations recently organized at the mining site and the large march this weekend, the protest takes two forms while maintaining a clear message: no to phosphate.
Under a threatening sky, women, young people, and the elderly from neighboring villages and hamlets gathered to march as one along National Route 2, from Agnam Thiodaye to Agnam Ouro Ciré. They wore red armbands and carried signs displaying slogans such as "No to land grabbing," "Hands off our land," and "Our land is not for sale." They also demanded the release of imprisoned youths.
Among the demonstrators were village chiefs, local dignitaries, religious leaders, and representatives of civil society, as well as members of the Agnam advocacy group and local mayors, all united in their opposition to any mining activity in the area. In their speeches, these various officials reiterated the residents' concerns, emphasizing their outrage at the proximity of the exploration sites to homes, fields, and pastures. Furthermore, in this region where the economy relies primarily on agriculture, livestock farming, and the sustainable management of natural resources, residents highlighted environmental risks, threats to public health, socio-economic disruptions, and expressed their anxieties about potential land grabbing.
Farba Ngom, the mayor and member of parliament for Agnam, alongside local dignitaries, religious leaders, and residents, denounced any attempt to force the issue and called for the swift intervention of state authorities. "We are appealing to the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Territorial Communities, the Prime Minister, and the President of the Republic to resolve this conflict," he declared.
