South African F. Mankonkwama and her Senegalese accomplice F. Dione, charged with international drug trafficking, face 15 years in prison. This sentence was requested by the prosecutor before the Criminal Court of Mbour, with the verdict expected on March 20, reports L'Observateur.
A birth took place in the gendarmerie premises
According to the same source, the case, which dates back to February 21, 2022, took an unusual turn: arrested while seven months pregnant, the drug mule gave birth to a premature baby at the Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) gendarmerie while in custody. Already a mother of four, she had been arrested upon disembarking from her plane with a suitcase containing 3.9 kg of heroin with a purity of 67%. Her alleged accomplice, F. Dione, was waiting for her in the airport parking lot to take her to a hotel in Dakar.
Before the judge, the two defendants attempted to recant their initial confessions. As reported by the newspaper of the Groupe Futurs Médias (GFM), the courier now maintains that she was unaware of the presence of drugs in the suitcase given to her by a fellow countryman named Ricky Diams, claiming she came to Senegal for a simple tourist trip to escape marital problems. F. Dione also denies any involvement, explaining that he simply wanted to do a friend a favor by picking up the woman.
However, as the Gfm headline points out, the investigation revealed damning evidence: the accomplice had already hired an interpreter and a reward of 2 million CFA francs had been promised to him once the drugs were sold.
