Aides Tabaski : marée humaine à Pikine pour 50 000 F CFA (vidéo)
As Tabaski approaches, town halls in several localities are being stormed by thousands of people seeking financial assistance, amid strong economic pressure, reports Wal fadjri in its edition today.
The Front de Terre press group's daily newspaper reports that in Pikine, particularly at the Léopold Sédar Senghor Cultural Complex, a massive crowd gathered from the early hours to submit requests for assistance addressed to Mayor Abdoulaye Thimbo. The turnout was so large that the police and the GMI (Mobile Intervention Group) had to erect barricades and close some roads. Some applicants even spent the night there hoping to be among the first to receive aid.
The testimonies gathered on site reflect a profound social distress. Fatou Faye, a resident of Diamaguène Sicap Mbao, illustrates this ordeal: "I came last night around midnight to spend the night, thinking I would be the first. But I found many people. It is now 1 p.m. and I still haven't been able to leave."
Oumy Ndione, a woman in her sixties from Guinaw Rails Nord, shared the same bitterness. After two days of unsuccessful attempts, she said with resignation, "This means people are tired." The craft sector is not spared either, as Cheikh Ndiaye, a young carpenter from Mbao, testifies: "Work isn't what it used to be. I had to leave one of my apprentices at the workshop to come and drop off his work here. I've been here since 6:00 a.m."
Faced with this cumbersome registration system, users are calling for the decentralization of applications to the municipalities. For this year's program, the Pikine municipality has allocated 400 million CFA francs, to be distributed among 8,000 beneficiaries, amounting to an allowance of 50,000 CFA francs per person. Given the scale of the needs, some local elected officials are already advocating for a significant increase in the social welfare budget, according to the same source.
