Après l’inauguration des ouvrages d’assainissement : Gandiaye dispose plus d’atouts sur la voie de la souveraineté alimentaire

The mayor of Gandiaye, Papa Songué Diop, praised the current and future benefits of the Rural Water and Sanitation Project (PEAMIR) in his community. During the two years of work, the company paid an estimated 450 to 500 million CFA francs in wages to young people in Gandiaye.

But today, the municipality expects economic benefits from the works inaugurated by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, on March 3, 2026. " This work must now be put at the service of a broader strategy: sustainable management of wastewater, valorization of sludge from cesspools, development of arboriculture, development of green spaces and support for our 'Gandiaye feeds Gandiaye' program which intends to constitute a contribution to the food sovereignty policy of our country," projected the mayor, Papa Songué Diop.

He thanked the authorities, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, the Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, and the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, for the construction of these infrastructures. However, he raised the issue of flood management in his municipality. "An integrated approach to sanitation therefore necessarily implies the control of stormwater," he stated.

To this end, we are requesting, either within the framework of corporate social responsibility (CSR), or by way of an amendment, the construction of retention basins.

Our municipality is indeed crossed by a valley, the "Ndama", a natural receptacle for rainwater, which causes significant difficulties during the rainy season due to the interference and accumulation of water," the mayor stated on March 3, 2026, during the inauguration of the works carried out by the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS), as part of the Water and Sanitation in Rural Areas Project (PEAMIR) financed by the World Bank.
