Aquaculture au Sénégal : un potentiel freiné par l’accès au foncier et à l’eau

In Senegal, aquaculture is gradually establishing itself as a strategic sector for food security and job creation. Despite the efforts made by the authorities, this activity is still struggling to reach its full potential, facing major difficulties, particularly access to land and water.

In several localities, aquaculture projects are hampered by land disputes, often pitting operators against local communities. This situation significantly slows the sector's development, despite it being identified as a key driver for achieving food self-sufficiency.

Cheikh Omar Gaye, a committed player in this sector based in the municipality of Darou Khoudoss, advocates for increased government support. According to him, aquaculture is not only a driver of job creation but also a crucial pillar for ensuring food security. However, he emphasizes that the necessary investments remain substantial, making financial and technical support for project developers essential.

He therefore calls on the authorities to facilitate access to land and water, but also to strengthen support in terms of financing, processing and preservation of aquaculture products.

Samba Kâ, Director General of the National Aquaculture Agency (ANA), acknowledges the challenges while highlighting the opportunities the sector offers. He emphasizes that water and land are the essential foundations of any aquaculture activity.

According to him, fish farming can be combined with market gardening, creating complementary and more resilient production systems. He also emphasizes that this activity represents a viable alternative for populations living far from coastal areas, allowing them access to fresh fish.

In this context, the State intends to intensify its support and extend aquaculture activities to new localities, particularly inland.
