The Financial Judicial Pool (PJF) has taken up a major fraud case. Mr. Dione, head of the travel agency "Agir Corporation Group," is being prosecuted for attempted migrant smuggling and visa fraud. The total losses, involving dozens of victims, are estimated at over 100 million CFA francs, reports L'Observateur.
A travel dream that turns into a nightmare
According to the same source, the case broke following a complaint filed by P. Kâ, a mother who had paid 3 million euros to send her son to a fair in Toulouse, an event that ultimately never took place. This initial testimony encouraged others to speak out: on February 25, a class-action lawsuit was filed by five other victims concerning a purported forum in the United States, representing immediate damages of 11.5 million euros. In total, nearly one hundred prospective travelers are believed to have been deceived by the agency.
An unconvincing defense
Summoned by the Division of Border Police (DPAF), the accused admitted to recruiting candidates for the United States, while contesting the number of complainants and the extent of the embezzled funds. To explain the disappearance of the money, he claimed to have been the victim of "charlatans" and theft, arguments deemed insufficient by investigators in the face of the influx of new complaints.
An exceptional procedure
Given the seriousness of the charges and the astronomical sums of money involved, the suspect was transferred to the Financial Judicial Pool (PJF). He is now being prosecuted for organized fraud and attempted migrant smuggling. Brought before the investigating magistrate, his placement under a detention order or judicial supervision is expected to be decided in the coming hours, according to the newspaper of the Future Media Group.
