The exploitation of mineral resources in Fogny Diabang, particularly zircon in the villages of Abéné, Bandjikaky, Kabadio, Kafountine, Kounkoudiang, Niafrang, has finally brought together the populations of this area of the communes of Kataba 1 and Kafountine around the essential and further strengthened the social fabric, promoting social cohesion.
The public hearing convened yesterday, Thursday, in Kabadio to inform the affected communities about the planned activities within the framework of the heavy mineral mining project in this part of the Bignona department, and to assess the project's environmental and social impacts, was a success. The overwhelming majority of the Fogny Diabang population approved the conclusions reached at this meeting. This public hearing provided an opportunity for the community to voice all their concerns related to the exploitation of the area's mineral resources, express their expectations, and gain a clearer understanding of the environmental studies and the social responsibility of the company in charge of the mining operation. The Deputy Sub-Prefect of Kataba, Amadou Baba Ndiaye, was present and oversaw the session on behalf of the authorities.
The company in G-Sand, responsible for mining these minerals in the area, has been approved by the local population, following the validation of the environmental and mining impact assessments. This approval came after discussions held under the supervision of administrative and local authorities. The communities unanimously approved the validation of the environmental and social impact assessments. Some concerns were raised by residents of Niafrang, who explained their reasons for opposing the mining operation.
This meeting is part of the initiative by the highest authorities for transparent and equitable management of mineral resources.
A further step towards strengthening social cohesion
For years, the social fabric in this area of Fogny Diabang has been somewhat strained by the numerous tensions arising from mining operations, particularly zircon mining in Niafrang and even Abéné. The communities as a whole were at odds. However, the measures taken by the highest authorities to ensure the full involvement of the local population in the process, and to push companies to prioritize social responsibility and environmental protection at all costs, seem to be bearing fruit.
Civil society encourages the people of Fogny Diabang to further cultivate this momentum, and to move towards a dynamic of consolidating social cohesion and strengthening the social fabric.
