[Billet] Amadou Ba à la presse nationale : Circulez, les « résiduels », BFMTV nous regarde !
Does the economic and intellectual patriotism so fervently promoted by the new regime stop at the doors of newsrooms? This is the ironic question one might ask after reading the latest social media post by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Amadou Ba. Overjoyed to see the government's major presentation to the National Assembly gain international attention, Amadou Ba proudly shared front pages from BFMTV, TV5Monde, and Sud Ouest, accompanied by a definitive pronouncement: "When the major international media outlets are following you closely, there's no point wasting time with the RESIDUALS." Senegalese journalists will surely appreciate the compliment: they are now relegated to the status of mere peripheral details.

This is the epitome of political hypocrisy. This unashamed celebration of "international preference" is all the more delicious as it comes right on the heels of the Prime Minister's speech. Speaking from the podium of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko had just vehemently denounced "intellectuals with inferiority complexes" and those "who are afraid of their own shadow" when facing the West.
Clearly, the Western complex is a variable concept: unforgivable among local intellectuals, but a source of ministerial pride as soon as a Parisian media outlet validates the audience figures for a sovereignist speech.
At a time when the government is endlessly theorizing about patriotism, seeing the Minister of Culture celebrate the fact of existing primarily in the eyes of Western media is certainly ironic. This facade of sovereignty has a cruel twist: it crumbles as soon as a Western spotlight shines.
