Cheikh Anta Diop : 40 ans après, interroger l’actualité et la fécondité de son héritage intellectuel
The Senegalese scholar Cheikh Anta Diop died in 1986. The year 2026 thus marks the fortieth anniversary of his passing. To revisit his work, an international symposium will be held on December 9, 10, and 11, 2026, at the University of Eastern Senegal (USO) in Tambacounda, on the theme "Reading Cheikh Anta Diop at the Dawn of the Challenges of the 21st Century." The aim is to examine the relevance and enduring influence of his intellectual legacy, at the crossroads of the scientific, political, and cultural spheres.
This will be a moment to update one's thinking in light of contemporary challenges: decolonization of knowledge, restoration of African historical consciousness, place of culture, unity of the continent, role of science, regional integration, development, democracy, youth, etc.
An emblematic figure of Pan-African thought and an exceptional scholar, Cheikh Anta Diop was a multidimensional intellectual. He understood the importance of interdisciplinarity very early on. He was a historian, physicist, linguist, and politician, articulating the hard sciences, culture, and politics. To reflect this dimension, the scientific event will provide a space for intergenerational and interdisciplinary, even transdisciplinary, exchange, bringing together intellectuals, activists, researchers, public decision-makers, and engaged artists, all within a Pan-African dynamic rather than a strictly national or academic one.
Cheikh Anta Diop made a profound contribution to the rehabilitation of African history and the development of a sovereign thought. Long marginalized during his lifetime, his work today constitutes a major reference in the contemporary dynamics of scientific, cultural, economic, and political sovereignty on the African continent.
Homage yes, but above all critical reappropriation
Cheikh Anta Diop was indeed one of the first thinkers to coherently articulate the quest for historical truth, the development of a situated African thought, and the struggle for the full sovereignty of African peoples.
This meeting aims to be a space for reflection, exchange, and scholarly production, offering an opportunity to revisit Diop's work and propose new interpretations in light of contemporary challenges. It will therefore be more than just a tribute; it will be a chance to launch a new project: that of an African renaissance grounded in scientific rigor, historical truth, and the unwavering pursuit of sovereignty. This will be achieved through a critical and strategic reappropriation of Diop's thought in light of Africa's urgent needs.
The event is organised by the Mandé School of the University of Eastern Senegal, in partnership with Impluvium.
