Chômage des jeunes : Le COAPP alerte sur une bombe à retardement en Afrique de l’Ouest
Youth unemployment remains one of the biggest challenges facing West Africa. In its report published last week, the West African Centre for Policy Analysis (COAPP) warned of this situation, marked by strong population growth and rapid urbanization that education and vocational training systems are struggling to keep pace with.
According to the document, thousands of young graduates find themselves unemployed or relegated to informal, unpaid, or precarious jobs. Particularly in higher education, the lack of career opportunities fuels frustration and a feeling of abandonment.
The report emphasizes that this disillusionment is all the more worrying as it occurs within a context of rising violent extremism in certain areas. "Idle and marginalized youth become more vulnerable to recruitment by extremist groups," warns COAPP.
The document reports that the gap between skills acquired in school and the actual needs of the job market is another major problem. Training programs, including those in entrepreneurship, remain too theoretical and lack a practical approach. As a result, many young entrepreneurs fail due to a lack of knowledge in business management, marketing, or access to financing.
COAPP also pointed out the weak collaboration between training institutions and businesses; the lack of internships and apprenticeship programs deprives young people of directly applicable field experience.
According to the document, regional estimates of the average unemployment rate are between 10 and 12%. However, the situation is much more critical among young people, where unemployment often reaches 30 to 40% in some countries. These figures fluctuate depending on economic crises, infrastructure investments, and political reforms.
For COAPP, without a deep reform of training systems and closer ties with the private sector, the risk is that an entire generation will be marginalized, with lasting economic and security consequences for the sub-region.
