Commémoration du massacre de Thiaroye : l'ex PM Amadou Ba honore la mémoire des tirailleurs tombés en 1944
On this December 1st, Senegal gathers to pay tribute to the Senegalese riflemen who were victims of the Thiaroye massacre, which occurred in 1944. These men, who returned from the front after serving with loyalty and courage, paid the ultimate price for demanding basic justice upon their return from the Second World War.
Their tragic fate remains one of the most painful episodes in the nation's history. In a shared post, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba reminds us that remembrance is not only a duty, but a moral imperative that guides the country's commitment to truth and fairness.
The president of the New Responsibility party wrote: "The commemoration of Thiaroye invites us to renew our loyalty to their ideals and to work towards a Senegal where every citizen, without distinction, is respected, protected and recognized. May their memory illuminate our collective path and inspire a future of peace, justice and dignity."
Amadou Ba emphasized that Thiaroye remains a powerful symbol of the struggle for justice and recognition of the sacrifices of African soldiers during the war.
"This day of commemoration is also an opportunity to reflect on the values of dignity, fairness and solidarity that continue to shape modern Senegal," he adds.
Amadou Ba concluded his message by calling for this memory to be used as a driving force for a more just and humane future.
Each year, the December 1st ceremony brings together authorities, memorial associations, families of riflemen and civil society to recall the importance of preserving the memory of these heroes and passing on their story to younger generations.
