Crise du riz local : L'État déploie un plan d'urgence pour écouler les stocks
The crisis in the sale of locally produced rice is pushing the Senegalese government to accelerate support measures for the sector. Following the mobilization of farmers in the Senegal River Valley, who on Monday denounced the poor sales of their produce and demanded the resignation of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Serigne Guèye Diop, the authorities announced a new mechanism to facilitate the marketing of locally produced rice.
A memorandum of understanding will be signed this Wednesday between the government and partner traders to strengthen the purchase and distribution of locally grown rice. The meeting, scheduled to take place at the ministry headquarters in Peytavin, will bring together the Prime Minister's office and representatives from the ministries of Trade, Finance, and Agriculture.
Through this agreement, the government aims to address the marketing difficulties faced by rice farmers. The document will specify the quantities of rice that traders commit to purchasing, the distribution methods, and the logistical arrangements.
The scheme provides for a proposed selling price of 280 CFA francs per kilogram, supplemented by a subsidy of 50 CFA francs per kilogram for rice farmers.
This initiative comes amid significant tension within the sector. On Monday, producers in the Senegal River Valley spoke out to raise awareness of their difficulties in selling their stocks. They also expressed their dissatisfaction with the Minister of Industry and Trade, even calling for his resignation.
To try to provide solutions, the ministry recalls that it has already undertaken several actions, including the purchase of approximately 9,000 tons of white rice from importers through the Market Regulation Agency and the Directorate of Domestic Trade, for an amount of 3.15 billion CFA francs.
The authorities also cite the freezing of imports of bananas, onions and potatoes as a measure intended to promote the sale of domestic produce.
