Débat sur l’homosexualité : Mame Makhtar Guèye répond à Ousmane Sonko
The Islamic NGO Jamra reacted swiftly to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko's statements in the National Assembly on Tuesday. In a statement, Mame Makhtar Guèye and his colleagues reaffirmed their unwavering support for the commander of the Keur Massar gendarmerie brigade and for Prosecutor Saliou Dicko, specifying that they were praying for their protection "until the complete dismantling of all local LGBT lobbies."
The NGO Jamra also reaffirmed its "opposition to any form of recognition or tolerance of homosexuality." It invokes religious figures such as Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, El Hadji Malick Sy, Baye Niasse, and Seydina Limamou Laye to support its position.
As a reminder, when addressing parliamentarians, the head of government firmly disapproved of the publication of names of people presented as homosexual. "Nothing authorizes them to publish people's names under the pretext that they are homosexual. This is a matter of state sovereignty, and the authorities are there to handle it," insisted Ousmane Sonko, reiterating that the handling of these issues falls exclusively under the purview of the State and the competent institutions.
The Prime Minister also specified that he had requested the withdrawal of security protection provided to an activist. "When I heard that security had been put at his disposal, I asked the Ministry of the Interior to withdraw it," he stated, emphasizing the institutional and sovereign nature of public order management and law enforcement, and taking a categorical stance against individual initiatives that he considers excessive.
These statements come amid heightened tensions surrounding the publication of names and identities of people allegedly homosexual in Senegal, sparking numerous reactions in public opinion and among civil society organizations.
