Décès de sa mère, son père, El Hadji Diouf… : l’histoire jamais racontée de Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly
Having come on as a substitute against Botswana, who were beaten 0-3 by Senegal in Group D of the AFCON, Cheikh Tidiane Sabaly, a 26-year-old Senegalese winger trained at Génération Foot and currently playing for FC Metz, needed only six minutes to deliver a pinpoint assist to Cherif Ndiaye, thus confirming his status as a luxury substitute in Pape Thiaw's system.
In Saré Kémo (Kolda), emotions are running high. His father, Momar Sabaly, a retired ISRA agent, interviewed by L'Observateur, is delighted: "Today, he not only makes the family proud, but also all of Senegal. Everyone agrees: what he does, he does with great professionalism."
However, as the Future Media Group's daily newspaper points out, Sabaly's journey has been anything but smooth sailing. Deeply affected by his mother's death in 2012, the young winger transformed this ordeal into inner strength. Never considered a precocious "prodigy" like Sadio Mané or Lamine Camara, he had to fight to establish himself.
Quoted by the same source, his older brother, Amadou Sabaly, now a teacher, recalls his early days in the youth ranks with ASC Kémo: “The coach wanted him to play for the first team. But since he was still very young, he put him in the youth team. In that category, he only played three matches. From the very first one, he put in a great performance. Every time, he passed to me, but I missed my chances. The second match was the same. Since I couldn't score despite all his passes, he took responsibility and scored a brace. In the third match, he scored another very beautiful goal.”
After a failed integration into El Hadji Ousseynou Diouf's "Kenja" football academy, Sabaly finally joined Génération Foot in 2014. He then signed with FC Metz in 2018, before embarking on several loan spells (Pau FC, Quevilly-Rouen) that ultimately launched his career. His versatility, explosiveness, and low center of gravity now make him a valuable substitute.
"Whether I'm a starter or a substitute, I'm always ready," the winger humbly confided in the mixed zone.
