The Tobor landfill, located in Boutoumone, which is slated to be relocated to the municipality of Niamone, is sparking fierce opposition. Residents, organized into a collective, denounce the project as being imposed without regard for legal and environmental procedures. They warn of serious health and agricultural consequences, while calling for citizen mobilization and legal intervention to restore transparency and protect their land.

Gathered around the collective fighting against the Boutoumone landfill, young people, professionals, and intellectuals from Niamone, along with citizens committed to environmental issues, sought to clarify their position regarding the mayor's statements. The mayor had claimed that the local population was now in favor of the project, a claim categorically rejected by the collective.

"At no point did the population concerned give its consent to this project," insisted Omar Fodé Coly, spokesperson for the collective.

According to him, activities related to the landfill began even before the administrative agreement was finalized, and the municipal councils did not receive complete information. The group also denounces the non-compliance with the Environmental Code, particularly the lack of a prior impact assessment and inclusive consultation. "Installing a landfill under such conditions is tantamount to placing a real time bomb on our territory," he added.

The main concerns are about the health and agricultural consequences. Mohamed Tendeng, president of the Tobor youth association, points out that the site is located only 150 meters from homes, while the standard requires a minimum distance of 213 meters. "The water we drink risks being contaminated, respiratory illnesses will worsen, and our crops will be threatened," he warned, emphasizing the threat this project poses to public health and food security.

Beyond the technical aspects, the project is perceived as an injustice. Alimatou Manga, a resident of Boutoumone, expresses the anger of the people: "A project is being imposed on us without any prior study, just like in the colonial era. The town is suffering, and we want a Senegal where the people are respected."

The group calls on traditional, religious, and moral authorities to break their silence and support the citizens' struggle. It also appeals to young people within the presidential movement to clarify their position: "It is time for everyone to take responsibility before history and before the people," insists Omar Fodé Coly.

The case is now before the Senegalese courts. Residents are counting on the judges to rectify the numerous irregularities that have been observed. In the meantime, they are demanding the immediate closure of the landfill and calling on all active members of the community to join the mobilization.
