Dossier Oumar Ndiaye : Entre récidive et actes de barbarie, le procès d'un crime qui a choqué la France
The victim narrowly escaped death after this barbaric crime which occurred in August 2023. Already convicted five times by the courts, the accused now faces life imprisonment.
Oumar Ndiaye, 21, is on trial from Wednesday, March 11, 2026, until Thursday, before the Manche Assize Court in Coutances, for rape with torture or acts of barbarity. The hearing will be held behind closed doors.
The events took place in Cherbourg on the morning of August 4, 2023. That Friday, Mégane, a 29-year-old woman living alone on the second floor of a building in the city center, was awakened around 8 a.m. by someone banging on her door. Thinking it was a neighbor who had made a mistake, she opened it without suspicion.
Her attacker, whom she had seen before but didn't know, rushed at her and punched her in the face and all over her body. He then raped her repeatedly, notably using a 75-centimeter broom handle. Before fleeing, the man gave her a false name and then told her, "If you talk, I'll kill you."
Seriously injured, Mégane—an employee at a facility for people with disabilities—managed to text her colleague and then called the fire department. Taken to the emergency room, doctors diagnosed a perforation of the colon, small intestine, peritoneum, and diaphragm, a pneumothorax, rib fractures, and a high risk of septic shock. After undergoing six hours of surgery, she was placed in an induced coma from which she emerged approximately one month later.
Accused's profile: "Neither empathy nor remorse"
Police arrested Oumar Ndiaye, then 18 years old, at his mother's home a week after the crime. His identification was made possible thanks to the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and the geolocation of his mobile phone.
While in custody, the suspect expressed neither empathy for the victim nor remorse. At the age of 18, he already had a lengthy criminal record: five convictions by the juvenile court for property damage and violence. He was also known for reports of a sexual nature, including a 2019 case of rape of a minor that was dismissed, and an ongoing investigation into the sexual assault of his sister.
For her part, Mégane returned to live with her mother after being discharged from the hospital. Undergoing psychological treatment and taking antidepressants, she no longer goes out alone and has not returned to work. She has also had to give up all sports.
The trial, which ends this Thursday, could shed light on some unanswered questions, particularly regarding the premeditation of the acts: the accused had already come knocking on his door four months before the crime.
