Douanes, taxes et retards : Les dessous de la pénurie du Getzner
In markets and tailoring workshops across Senegal, one complaint is heard repeatedly: Getzner fabric, highly sought after for special occasions, is becoming increasingly hard to find. This situation is worrying both merchants and customers alike.
According to several industry insiders, this scarcity is due to a combination of economic and logistical factors. \"Over the last two years, purchasing power has dropped significantly. Perhaps this is linked to the political transition and change of government,\" confided one merchant on condition of anonymity. She also pointed to increased customs duties and taxes applied to imported fabrics.
Sharply Rising Logistics Costs
In reality, importers are facing ever-higher costs. Between new taxes, rising transport fees, and prolonged delays at ports, shipping containers are taking much longer to arrive. The result: local stocks are dwindling and prices are climbing.
For tailors, the situation is becoming a real concern. Getzner, renowned for its quality and elegance, is often requested by clients for ceremonies. But faced with its scarcity, some professionals are turning to alternatives, which are sometimes cheaper but also less favored.
A Widespread Strain in the Textile Sector
This market tension isn't limited to just one material. Several merchants mention a gradual scarcity of other fabric types, a direct consequence of what they describe as a more restrictive economic environment.
While waiting for import conditions to improve, both customers and professionals must adapt, compromising on quality or increasing their budgets. This reality reflects, beyond just textiles, the current economic challenges facing many business sectors in Senegal.
