Éboulement meurtrier à Kharakheyna : Le directeur régional des Mines appelle au renforcement de la sécurité
The regional director of Mines in Kédougou visited the site of the landslide that occurred two days ago in Kharakheyna, a tragedy that claimed the lives of seven gold miners. The field visit was marked by emotion, but also by a firm appeal to the mining company AfriGold for an immediate strengthening of safety measures within its operating area.
On site, Abou Sow paid tribute to the victims: "We bow before the memory of the deceased. It is a profoundly distressing situation that we have found here."
According to him, the victims were illegal gold miners. Under the weight of the rocks, "the slopes collapsed, causing a landslide that resulted in seven deaths," explained Mr. Sow.
The regional director of Mines particularly deplored the fact that the tragedy occurred within a perimeter legally allocated to a mining company. "What is most distressing is that this situation unfolded within an area authorized for a mining company. In light of what happened, it is imperative that the company strengthen security at this site, notably by increasing the number of security personnel to ensure real-time monitoring," he insisted.
Beyond the security emergency, Abou Sow pointed out that gold panning remains an unavoidable socio-economic reality in the Kédougou region. "It's a worrying situation, but for years, the State has revived the project to regulate gold panning, because it's a reality that can no longer be ignored," he stressed.
He also indicated that the new authorities, under the leadership of the supervising minister, have given clear instructions to accelerate the regulatory process. "If designated gold mining corridors were already in place, this kind of situation could be avoided. The mining administration is currently working diligently: thirty sites have already been identified, and corridors will soon be officially defined and made available to the gold miners in order to ease the situation," he announced.
While emotions remain high in Kharakheyna, this official visit reignites the debate on the coexistence between industrial mining and traditional gold panning, as well as on the urgent need for concrete measures to prevent further tragedies.
