Éclaboussé par une affaire de falsification de documents : Cheikh Mbengue, des taches noires sur une carrière exemplaire
In the spotlight following his arrest in a document forgery case, Cheikh Mbengue was nevertheless known as one of the best left-backs of his generation.
He joined the Toulouse football club training centre at a very young age.
Originally a left winger, he was quickly repositioned as a full-back. Agile, disciplined, and consistent, he established himself as a key player at Toulouse FC. His performances earned him a place in the French U21 team, where he received 12 caps.
Having been a regular starter for Toulouse (159 Ligue 1 appearances), Cheikh Mbengue naturally attracted the attention of the Senegalese Football Federation. Under the management of Amara Traoré, he earned his first cap on June 4, 2011, during a challenging away match for Senegal against Cameroon in Yaoundé (0-0), a qualifier for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. He played in all three group stage matches of the tournament.
Three AFCON appearances with Senegal
Three years later, he participated in a second AFCON under the leadership of Alain Giresse. As in 2012, again in Equatorial Guinea, Senegal was eliminated in the group stage.
His best performance for the national team came during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, where, alongside Sadio Mané's generation, he reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Cameroon (0-0, 5-4 on penalties). This would be his last AFCON appearance. He finished with 31 caps.
A fulfilling club career
After his time at Toulouse, he signed with Stade Rennais in 2013. At the Breton club, he put together a string of good performances and even wore the captain's armband. In 2016, at the age of 28, he joined AS Saint-Étienne, but the adventure didn't go as planned: in three seasons, he only played 27 matches.
His latest experience takes place in China, at Shenzhen FC, where he plays around ten matches with a very lucrative contract.
Despite this document forgery case which tarnishes him today, Cheikh Mbengue, who returned to Senegal after his career to participate in the development of national football, had, until now, shown the face of an exemplary professional, recognized for his rigor and seriousness.
