The mineral sands mine operated by the Eramet group in Senegal will remain shut down "for an extended period of time, the duration of which remains undetermined at this stage" following a fire that occurred on February 22, the company announced Thursday.
The fire, which caused no casualties, led to the shutdown of one of the sites, interrupting the activity of "the entire site at the end of March 2026, for a long period whose duration remains undetermined at this stage," Eramet said in a statement.
"Initial inspections confirm that the fire remained confined to the facilities of the first stage of the screening process" of "the wet concentration unit where heavy minerals are separated from the extracted sand," Eramet explains. "The facilities of the second stage of the process, in particular the spirals for separating the mineralized sands, were not affected."
The company has "notified its affected customers and suppliers of the activation of the force majeure clauses provided for in its contracts".
She also presented to staff representatives the "initial arrangements for adapting operations in light of the site closure." "An assessment of the impact on team organization is underway to determine appropriate support measures," she said.
Eramet, which produces manganese, nickel, mineral sands and lithium, has also suspended its production targets related to this activity, promising an "update" "as soon as the investigations allow for better visibility and precise quantification of the effects" on overall production.
The French mining group, which suffered a net loss of 477 million euros in 2025 and experienced turbulence in its management teams, plans to recapitalize during 2026, to "strengthen" its balance sheet and "prepare for the future".
The company has more than 10,000 employees in 16 countries. In mid-February, it indicated that it had written down the value of its mineral sands extraction business in its accounts by €171 million, due to the "decline in long-term price prospects in this market".
