Expiration des cartes biométriques : Les inquiétudes d’Adji Mbergane Kanouté
A serious warning hangs over the Senegalese electoral system. The ECOWAS biometric national identity card, introduced in 2016 and valid for ten years, is about to expire.
According to Adji Mbergane Kanouté, Secretary General of the Political Bureau of the Union for the Development of Senegal / Authentic (UDS/A), "the majority of the documents issued will expire by 2026".
This deadline could deprive a significant portion of the population of their right to vote.
Indeed, the revision of the electoral lists requires the presentation of a valid biometric card. Without a mass renewal or an automatic extension of validity, millions of voters, including first-time voters, would find themselves in a precarious situation.
To date, no official announcement has been made by the authorities regarding a renewal plan or a transitional measure. This lack of communication is fueling concerns among citizens and political actors.
Cybersecurity threat
Adding to this problem is another source of anxiety: an alleged cyberattack against the data of the File Automation Directorate (DAF).
For Ms. Kanouté, the expiration of biometric cards and the lack of transparency surrounding cybersecurity risk undermining the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.
She calls on the State to react quickly and responsibly in order to guarantee citizen participation and preserve trust in institutions.
