Fête de l’indépendance : Mame Seydou Ndour rend hommage aux forces de sécurité et aux martyrs de 1994

On the occasion of the celebration of Senegal's Independence Day, the Director General of the National Police, Mame Seydou Ndour, praised the commitment and professionalism of the security forces, while paying a vibrant tribute to the police officers who fell in the line of duty.

During the awards ceremony held at the Camp Tropical in Thiès, immediately following the parade, he recalled the historical significance of April 4th, which marks Senegal's accession to international sovereignty. He described it as an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment to republican values and to assess the progress made since the founding of the state.

Distinctions

In the presence of the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, the Director General congratulated all personnel who participated in the parade, particularly those of the National Police, whose performance was praised for its quality. He highlighted the rigor, discipline, and bearing of the troops, stating that they reflected the professionalism of the institution and honored the national motto: "One People – One Goal – One Faith."

The ceremony was also marked by the recognition of several officers, who were awarded National Orders or the Police Medal of Honor. These awards recognize their loyalty, dedication, and service to the state, making them role models for their peers.

Renaming of the "Tropical Camp"

A key moment of this commemoration was the decision to rename the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI) camp. From now on, the former "Camp Tropical" will bear the name "Camp of the Martyrs of February 16, 1994", in memory of the six police officers who died during clashes while carrying out their mission of maintaining order.

According to the Director General of Police, February 16, 1994 remains a significant date in the history of the National Police. "These officers fell defending the rule of law and the safety of citizens, and their sacrifice will continue to inspire current and future generations," said Mame Seydou Ndour.

Addressing the families of the missing, the head of the National Police expressed the gratitude of the entire institution, praising their dignity in the face of this ordeal and assuring them that the memory of the victims will forever be honored.

In a demanding security context, he called on law enforcement to demonstrate vigilance, professionalism and integrity, while strengthening the relationship of trust with the population.

Commitment to the Youth Olympic Games

Finally, the Director General addressed the upcoming 2026 Youth Olympic Games, emphasizing that this is a major international event that demonstrates the country's stability. He assured that the National Police, alongside other defense and security forces, will play a central role in ensuring security and contributing to the success of this global event.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all participants, spectators and the public, while projecting a positive image of our country on the world stage. This responsibility honors us and strengthens our determination to maintain the standards of professionalism and discipline that characterize our forces,” he stated.

According to Mame Seydou Ndour, the Youth Olympic Games will be an opportunity to show the world the excellence of our security institutions and our ability to organize events of international scope.

The ceremony concluded with wishes for peace, stability and prosperity for Senegal, accompanied by prayers for the nation and for all security forces.
