On the occasion of the celebration of Labour Day, the workers of the Senegal Railways (CFS) held a meeting marked by an overall feeling of satisfaction, while recalling some concerns that are still outstanding.

The Secretary General of the Unified Union of Railway Workers (SUTRAIL), Babacar Gaye, welcomed the progress made since last year. According to him, the context of this 2026 May Day celebration contrasts sharply with that of 2025, which was marked by numerous union demands.

“This year, we are celebrating May Day with much more satisfaction,” he said, emphasizing that the company agreement, a central concern last year, had been reached. It provided responses deemed generally satisfactory to the workers’ grievances.

Among the major achievements, Babacar Gaye cited the introduction of a loyalty bonus, long demanded by railway workers. He also mentioned the increase in the housing allowance as well as the integration of new bonuses, particularly those linked to training, performance, and productivity.

He noted as another significant step forward the recategorization of certain employees. "Some workers had spent nearly fifteen years in the company without receiving a promotion," he recalled, welcoming a measure that corrects a situation deemed unfair.

According to the union representative, these various measures have contributed to easing social tensions within the company and to greater stability in professional relationships.

Despite everything, the railway workers do not intend to let their guard down. They are still demanding the finalization of the outstanding debts related to previous management. This concerns sums owed to several retirees, the payment of which is still pending.

On this May 1st, railway workers are calling on the authorities to accelerate the resolution of this issue, in order to consolidate the gains and further strengthen confidence within the railway sector.
