Fête du Travail : Les ouvriers de Thiès présentent leur cahier de doléances à l’État
On the occasion of the celebration of Labour Day, this May 1st, 2026, workers in the Thiès region sent a memorandum to the governor, highlighting their main concerns related to working conditions, remuneration and local employment.
Gathered around their president Abdoulaye Dieng, the workers took advantage of this symbolic day to remind everyone that work remains a fundamental pillar of human dignity and economic development.
But beyond the festive aspect, they insisted on the need to concretely improve their living and working conditions.
Among the major demands is the strengthening of safety measures in the workplace. Workers denounce the inadequacy of controls on construction sites and in factories in the Thiès industrial zone, as well as the lack of personal protective equipment, particularly in the construction and maintenance sectors.
On the social front, they are demanding a wage increase to address the rising cost of living. They are also insisting on strict adherence to the Labor Code, particularly through formalized contracts and the establishment of employee representatives. Paying back wages to workers in struggling companies is also a priority.
The workers are also advocating for greater consideration of local employment in ongoing development projects in the region. They are calling on the authorities to prioritize workers from Thiès and to strengthen vocational training programs, particularly for those working in the informal sector.
Finally, these workers proposed the creation of a regional consultation framework bringing together unions, labor inspectors, and employers. This mechanism, they argued, would make it possible to anticipate social conflicts and promote constructive dialogue.
While reaffirming their commitment to Senegal's economic development, the workers emphasized that decent work necessarily requires safe working conditions and fair wages. They expressed their hope that their grievances would receive special attention from the authorities.
