Fondations des premières dames : Seydi Gassama rappelle un précédent avec Viviane Wade
The creation of the Senegal Solidarity Foundation, spearheaded by First Ladies Marie Khone Faye and Absa Faye, continues to generate reactions. In a series of tweets, the executive director of Amnesty International Senegal, Seydi Gassama, argues for better structuring of these initiatives.
"One option would be to institutionalize the First Lady(s) Foundation. This would help avoid unfortunate situations like that of the ultramodern hospital built in Ninéfécha by Mrs. Viviane Wade. A hospital abandoned after the Wades left power," he writes, referring to former President Abdoulaye Wade.
Continuing, he specifies that "this hospital would have become a health post managed by the municipality with only three employees: a head nurse, a midwife and an employee in charge of selling medicines".
Presented as a tool to support public policies in the areas of education, health and women's empowerment, the foundation nevertheless raises questions about its governance and sources of funding.
For Seydi Gassama, the institutionalization of foundations linked to first ladies could thus guarantee their sustainability and better transparency in their management.
