Saint-Louis : la riposte contre la fièvre de la Vallée du Rift s’intensifie
The Saint-Louis region is stepping up its fight against Rift Valley fever. Gathered this Friday with Governor Al Hassane Sall to review early actions, health officials, administrative authorities, and local authorities took stock of the epidemic's progress. This assessment reveals an encouraging trend: no deaths have been recorded in the past week, and the number of cases is significantly decreasing.
"We have seen positive developments. The curve is falling and, thank God, no deaths have been recorded for nearly a week," said Governor Al Hassane Sall. However, he insisted that vigilance remains essential, urging the population not to "rest on their laurels."
Faced with this relative lull, regional authorities intend to maintain pressure on the virus. The response is structured around three major areas: livestock vaccination, mass distribution of mosquito nets, and community awareness.
On the veterinary front, the governor insisted on continuing to vaccinate animals, the main reservoirs of the virus. "With the Ministry of Livestock, we are working to obtain the necessary number of doses to cover the entire region's livestock," he assured.
On the humane side, fifty thousand mosquito nets have already been distributed in the most affected areas. But the need remains considerable. "We need five hundred thousand mosquito nets to cover all the homes in Saint-Louis," the governor said, announcing a massive distribution campaign to come.
Communication and awareness-raising also remain at the heart of the regional strategy. Al Hassane Sall praised the involvement of community stakeholders and local media in disseminating prevention messages. "Spots are broadcast and information sessions are organized in schools to involve all segments of the population," he added.
The Governor also welcomed the continued support of the central authorities, particularly the President of the Republic and the Minister of Health, whose interventions have helped to strengthen care and logistics on the ground.
Despite the progress made, four serious cases remain under treatment in the region's health facilities. Authorities are therefore cautious and calling for continued efforts.
"We are not there yet, but we hope to declare the end of the epidemic very soon," concluded the governor, confident but determined to maintain the mobilization until the total eradication of Rift Valley fever in Saint-Louis.
