Gandiol : 20 femmes ostréicoles formées à la natation et aux premiers secours
In Gandiol, in the department of Saint-Louis, about twenty women from oyster farming economic interest groups (GIE) are taking part in aquatic safety and first aid training, as part of the FISH4ACP program.
Organized from April 6 to 12, 2026, this session aims to strengthen the capacity of oyster farming stakeholders to address the risks associated with their activities. Initiated by the FISH4ACP program, it responds to a pressing issue: according to a study, 27% of oyster farming cooperatives (GIEs) have recorded at least one accident in recent years. "It was therefore urgent to take action," emphasizes Ami Collé Gaye, the program's national administrator.
Led by ICD Africa, in partnership with the National Fire Brigade, the training combines theory and practice. Participants are trained in first aid, rescue techniques, swimming, and water safety.
In total, around twenty beneficiaries are participating in this first cohort, with the aim of becoming liaisons within their communities. "We are preparing them to be ambassadors capable of passing on these essential skills," explains Ms. Gaye.
Beyond safety, this initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the oyster industry in Senegal. Launched in 2021, the program is supported by the FAO, with additional support from the European Union and German cooperation. The session will conclude with a public rescue demonstration, designed to raise awareness among local communities about life-saving techniques.
