Gorée : retour sur une soirée de frayeur en mer
A Monday, September 2, 2025, that the people of Goré will not soon forget. On that day, the Beer longboat, coming from the port of Dakar, was making its usual 5:20 p.m. shuttle to transport residents and tourists to the island of memory. But weather conditions would disrupt this journey.
As the captain was carrying out the docking maneuver, a strong wind blew up. According to several witnesses, it was between wind speeds 3 and 4, enough to make the waves dance and prevent the ship from docking. Forced to follow the wind, the Beer caused extensive damage, colliding with private boats and canoes located offshore.
Battered by the gusts, the lifeboat saw ropes from its ships become entangled in its propellers. It was at this point that the sailors rushed into the water to try to untangle the craft, before being reinforced a few moments later by the firefighters. After several hours of fierce fighting, the lifeboat was finally freed.
The ship did not, however, immediately put back to sea. It was towed to port by the oldest of the three longboats serving the Dakar-Gorée route, the Coumba Castel, which arrived on the island around 10 p.m.
Following these events, calm gradually returned to the island. However, numerous boats, including one responsible for collecting waste and transporting it to the other shore, were positioned along the beach. As one, the islanders mobilized to pull these vessels out of the water and bring them to safety.
Only a pirogue and the boat of Gorée's mayor, Augustin Senghor, remain at anchor. The town councilor's boat serves as an ambulance boat to transport residents to Dakar in case of medical emergencies. It was assigned this mission at the end of 2023 after a similar incident damaged its predecessor. Alongside the other vessels, this last one, now out of commission, is nothing more than a decorative wreck.

La responsabilité des services météo du Port de Dakar est lourdement engagée. Comment n'ont ils pas pu donner l'alerte pour éviter ce supplice. Il faut changer quelque chose à la météo portuaire. Quelqu'un n'a pas fait son travail. Et cela pouvait créer un accident qui allait porter un tres lourd préjudice au tourisme sur l'île de Gorée. A bon entendeur
