Grève dans la santé : le PIT-Sénégal prend fait et cause pour les travailleurs
The Independence and Labour Party of Senegal (PIT-Senegal) published, on April 24, 2026, a statement of support for workers in public health structures, who have been observing a strike movement for three days at the call of the Federation of Health Unions (F2S), And Gueusseum and the Union of Health Contractuals.
According to them, the workers "demand that the Government effectively implement the agreements it freely signed, whether it be the National Pact for Social Stability or the various sectoral platforms."
The party notes that this movement "seriously disrupts the functioning of public health structures with serious consequences for patients and that it could have been avoided, as multiple initiatives of reminder, warning and caution were sent to the competent authorities, who remained deaf and mute, without sufficient consideration for the thousands of patients dependent exclusively on the public health service."
Better still, he said he expressed "his full solidarity and resolute support for the struggle of health workers, whose demands focus on improving their working conditions, through the gradual reduction of the critical staff deficit, estimated at 18,000 agents, by an annual recruitment of 3,500 agents, the increase in the health budget, remaining below 3% of the general budget of 2026, as well as the strengthening of allocations intended for public hospitals."
The workers are also demanding an improvement in their living conditions, through the effective implementation of the extinction and reclassification of corps, the generalization of the housing allowance, the application of the 2016 decree on the status of staff of public health establishments, as well as the call for applications for positions of responsibility.
The party "strongly denounces the irresponsible attitude of the Government, which is fueling chronic and dangerous instability in a sector so strategic for the well-being of the Senegalese," and "demands the immediate opening of serious and sincere negotiations, focusing in particular on the modalities of implementation of the agreements signed, especially those that have expired."
He states that "the failure to implement agreements reached with the unions stems, to a large extent, from the deterioration of public finances, severely impacted by the crushing burden of external debt." For the party, "as long as the debt crisis is not addressed with humility, clarity, and determination, through pragmatic solutions implemented without delay, it will be illusory to expect a lasting satisfaction of social demands, including union demands."
The PIT calls on the trade union movement to play "a decisive role in breaking with the vicious cycle of poorly managed debt by the Government, in which the country has been engaged."
