Two teachers, El Ha Ndao and AA Wellé, appeared before the Pikine-Guédiawaye court in a unique atmosphere, marked by the presence of dozens of students in school uniform in the audience, who had come to witness their teachers' trial. Prosecuted for defaming their superior, the two defendants ultimately avoided prison sentences after expressing their remorse in court.
An administrative report as a spark
The case, according to L'Observateur, which attended the trial, originated with an administrative sanction: the headmaster of the Ndiarka Diagne elementary school in Fith Mith, I. Diop, had written a report highlighting Mr. Ndao's repeated lateness and absences. This action triggered a brutal reaction. Through a WhatsApp group for colleagues and support staff, Mr. Ndao circulated an exceptionally violent audio message, calling his superior a "sexual pervert," a "homosexual," and a "pedophile."
Clandestine recording and confession
The case took a more troubling turn with the involvement of AA Wellé, a teacher nearing retirement, accused of secretly recording a conversation with the director in order to provide "ammunition" to Mr. Ndao. In court, after denials that irritated the judge, the two defendants finally confessed, justifying their actions by anger and asking their superior for forgiveness.
Clemency to save careers
In a conciliatory gesture, the director accepted the apologies, with his lawyer even pleading for leniency to "preserve the careers" of those involved. The prosecutor thus dismissed some charges, but upheld the charges of defamation and invasion of privacy.
The court followed this line of reasoning, sentencing the two teachers to two months' suspended imprisonment and a fine of 100,000 FCFA each. Ndao and Wellé were acquitted of charges of criminal conspiracy and making death threats, reports the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group.
