Hamidou Anne warned on iRadio of the risks of "social breakdown" threatening Senegal. He described a country going through a "zone of high vulnerability" where economic and social factors are dangerously intertwined.
Hamidou Anne, a member of the Alliance for the Republic (APR), paints a bleak economic picture, citing the "economic slowdown," the scarcity of investment, and the burden of debt and deficit. "The economy is showing signs of slowing down; investment is dwindling; debt and the deficit are weighing heavily," he analyzes.
According to him, this situation is fueling a "simmering anger" in the population, which he compares to the social tensions that recently led to brutal political upheavals in Madagascar or Morocco.
He regrets that the public debate is being diverted by partisan squabbles when the "great question of our time" remains that of inequality and the exclusion of young people.
He highlights an untenable demographic and social paradox: "70% of Senegalese are under 35, but only 10% of graduates have a job. This equation is explosive."
He emphasizes that the loss of meaning in the face of a lack of prospects pushes many young people towards exile, recalling that "when life loses its meaning, the sea becomes an escape."
Another cause for concern is the failure of mediation mechanisms. Mr. Anne laments that "anger no longer has a voice," because the academics and intellectuals who should have played this counter-power role have "discredited themselves through partisan stances."
He mentions verbal excesses and calls for the army as signs that frustrations could converge into a "social explosion" with incalculable consequences if the course is not corrected.
To avoid this scenario, Hamidou Anne calls for an immediate refocusing of the public debate on the real emergencies: jobs and training, industrialization, social justice and national cohesion.
