"Ils ont perdu leur âme pour l'argent" : Un touriste belge tacle la téranga à Gorée
Gorée Island, a symbol of Senegalese history and culture, was the scene of a painful experience for a Belgian tourist known as "Vagabond of Happiness." He shared his ordeal on Gorée Island, where he was forced to sleep on the street, via the social media platform TikTok.
In a moving testimony, he expressed his distress and disappointment at the situation: "I slept on the street because I only had 10,000 CFA francs," he said, visibly affected. He explained that hotel managers were asking him for at least 50,000 CFA francs for a night's stay, an amount he simply couldn't afford.
Having been in Senegal for two months, he regrets that some people have lost their Senegalese spirit, that legendary hospitality for which the country is so proud. "People were capable of refusing you just for money (...), even though there were empty rooms," he laments.
In response to comments from internet users comparing the West to Africa, the tourist believes that Africa should not take its cues from "Europe, which is a lost continent, devoid of all humanity." He calls for greater solidarity and compassion among all, reminding everyone that teranga (hospitality) is a treasure that must be preserved and shared with all.
