Infanticide à Sandiara : Elle accouche dans un seau d’eau et abandonne le nouveau-né dans un dépotoir
A case of infanticide occurred in Sandiara where a newborn boy was found dead in a public dump. At the heart of this case is a young woman named Mbayang Kane.
According to reports, on the night of August 28, 2022, around 3 a.m., Mbayang Kane was awakened by severe pain accompanied by diarrhea. She then went to the toilet where she gave birth alone, in extremely precarious conditions, to a baby boy.
According to the investigation, the newborn was allegedly submerged in a bucket of water. The umbilical cord, cut approximately 10 cm from the navel, indicates an unassisted and dangerous birth.
Then, the young woman allegedly took a bath before going back to bed "as if nothing had happened", according to the prosecution.
The infant's body was later found in a dump in Sandiara, sparking shock and outrage among the population.
During the investigation, the accused gave contradictory accounts. At times she claimed her pregnancy was the result of a rape she attributed to SI Ngom, and at other times she mentioned a relationship with a boyfriend. She did, however, admit to having concealed her pregnancy from her family, with whom she lived, particularly at the home of her older sister, K. Ndiaye.
Before the criminal court, Mbayang Kane cited family problems that she said she could not explain. The presiding judge firmly rejected this argument, stating that no personal difficulty could justify such an act.
The public prosecutor described the act as "a criminal and malicious act," reminding the court that infanticide is the murder or killing of a newborn. He maintained that the accused deliberately caused the death of her child by drowning it in a bucket. He requested that the accused be found guilty and asked for a ten-year prison sentence.
The defense, led by attorney Ramatoulaye Ba, contested this version of events. The lawyer maintained that her client did not intentionally kill the child, but rather abandoned it. She cited the medical certificate, which, according to her, did not definitively establish that the death was due to a deliberate act by the mother. The defense therefore argued for a reclassification of the charges.
Despite these arguments, the court upheld Ms. Kane's criminal responsibility.
The verdict is scheduled for April 17, 2026.
