IPS 2024 : Le Sénégal sacré champion d’Afrique de la statistique
Senegal confirms its leadership in statistical production. According to the latest statistical performance indicators (SPIs) published by the World Bank, the country ranks first in Africa with a score of 81.4 out of 100 for the year 2024.
"The World Bank assessed the quality of national statistical systems in 188 economies covering more than 99% of the world's population. For the last year under review (2024), Senegal ranked first in Africa with a score of 81.4 out of 100," according to a press release. It narrowly edged out South Africa (81.3), Mauritius (80.4), and Egypt (78.1).
A notable progression for Senegal, which still occupied fourth place in 2023 and 2022 behind these same nations.
This remarkable performance illustrates the significant progress of the national statistical system (NSS), which has been praised internationally.
The IPS, a global benchmark, assesses the quality of statistical systems in 188 economies covering more than 99% of the world's population. It is based on five essential pillars: data use, accessibility and dissemination, statistical products, data sources, and infrastructure.
Beyond the ranking, this result reflects the Senegalese government's ongoing commitment to reliable, accessible, and development-oriented public statistics. It highlights the strategic importance of investments in statistical tools, considered a lever of sovereignty.
Building on this recognition, Senegal aims to consolidate its achievements through capacity building for data producers, expansion and regularity of national surveys, better use of administrative data and increased integration of new technologies.
This distinction comes in a symbolic context, marking the 20th anniversary of the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD) and the reform of the SSN, dedicating two decades of commitment, innovation and leadership in the service of data and development.
