Kaffrine : Le calvaire des conducteurs de Jakarta face à la grève des transporteurs
In Kaffrine, the transport workers' strike continues to severely disrupt travel and economic activity. In several neighborhoods of the city, commuters and Jakarta motorcycle taxi drivers are feeling the effects of this partial paralysis of the transport sector acutely. Between a lack of customers, long waits, and decreased income, daily life is becoming increasingly difficult for these urban transport workers.
Baye Zal, a driver from Jakarta, whom we met on site, described a situation that has become worrying since the start of the movement: “Since the beginning of the strike, our business has slowed to a crawl. We stay here from morning till night earning almost nothing, even though it’s our only source of income to support ourselves. The situation is very difficult. That’s why we solemnly call on all stakeholders to find a solution to allow drivers to return to work under decent conditions.”
Omar, also a Jakarta motorcycle taxi driver, shares the same concerns. For him, only dialogue can resolve the crisis: “The strike is not beneficial for the country. It is therefore preferable for the government to engage in discussions with the transport unions. The drivers have demands, and the government must invite them to the table to exchange ideas and reach a consensus. Currently, business is almost at a standstill, as cars are usually the ones that transport customers to the Jakarta motorcycle taxis. We therefore call on the government to reconsider its position and prioritize dialogue with the unions.”
The heartfelt cry of users and local stakeholders
Beyond the drivers, the general population is also suffering the consequences of this situation. Daily travel is becoming difficult, especially for reaching workplaces, markets, or essential services. Serigne Wilane testifies: “The situation is very difficult, and it is the people who are bearing the brunt of it, as they cannot go about their business as usual. Our activity has slowed to a crawl, and it is even becoming difficult to meet daily expenses. Dialogue is therefore essential.”
However, some industry players are calling for a swift resumption of operations to ease the burden on users and revive local mobility. Fallou Mangane explains: “The strike must end, as people are no longer able to get around properly. As for Jakarta motorcycles, we make more profit when the transportation sector is functioning normally. Some customers need to travel long distances that motorcycles cannot cover, or can only do so at a prohibitive cost.”
On the ground, both drivers and users are now hoping for a swift resolution to this crisis, through dialogue between the State and transport unions, in order to allow a normal resumption of activities in the Kaffrine region.
